The only access to the island is by ferry, which makes it even more special. Formentera is divided into five small urban areas: La Savina, Sant Francesc, Es Pujols, Sant Ferran and El Pilar de la Mola. Sant Francesc is its capital city and in the central square you will find the church which was initially built as pirate’s defense.
In its 84 km2 you will find more than ten beaches. Ses Illetes is the most famous one and was declared world heritage by UNESCO. Among its typical dishes, you can find the “Ensalada Payesa” its typical salad mainly made of dried fish, potatoes and tomatoes; also the lobster with fried eggs and potatoes; or the “Greixonera” which is an island’s traditional dessert.
Apart from its beaches, food and sunny days, the island has a lot more to offer. You can take a walk among its various markets, visit one of its lighthouses or just enjoy a sunset in one of its beach bars.
